A Photographers Guide To The Best Events In Geelong

July 31, 2019 by

Geelong has become more of an events hub lately. The town has attracted more sports and art events, which gives photographers more opportunities to get great photos.

This page curates our favourite events. Where possible, we link to additional guides with tips to get the most out of each event. Enjoy!

Floating Christmas Tree

The floating Christmas tree was introduced to the Geelong Waterfront in 2014 and has since become a popular attractions. In November each year, thousands gather for the official launch. The launch lasts for hours as crowds wait for the evening fireworks.

It is worth waiting until after the launch to walk to the launch of the Christmas projections at Geelong Town Hall. Santa, the magic meter elves and a marching band lead the way as families walk through Moorabool and Little Malop Street.

Geelong Revival

Geelong Revival is one of my favourite events to photograph. There is so much going on! Best of all, you don’t even need to be interested in cars to enjoy yourself.

You can get great shots of the cars lined up at various vantage points along the waterfront. There are fashion shows, a city cruise and cars doing sprints. Eastern Beach is so busy during this time.

Cadel Evans Road Race

The Cadel Evans Road race is a lot of fun to photograph. It is held over 4 days in Summer and has generated a lot of interest locally. You can photograph the riders themselves or the spectators at one of dedicated viewing sites.

Festival Of Sails

The sailing part of it is quite dull but the waterfront itself is packed with events. There is the Regetta Village, kids performances and the popular ski and stunt show. The harbour precinct is busy

Nightjar

The Nightjar Market is an annual festival held in February. It starts in late afternoon and continues into the evening, so you get a mixture of families and the older crowd who want to enjoy a relaxing evening. There is a mixture of market stalls, food vans and performances so is great for experimenting with street photography.

Geelong After Dark

Geelong After Dark is an annual arts festival held in Central Geelong. Unlike White Night, it doesn’t just stick to installations that involve light. There is interactive art; street performances; installations; music; exhibitions; projections and more. It is very busy and is great for black and white photography.

Humans In Geelong

Humans in Geelong is a an annual expo that celebrates the diverse range of locals who are taking action, making a difference, and creating a better world for our children. The event is smaller then most, which can make it easier to get photos. There are public events and activities held in the foyer and usually a surprise flashmob of some kind around lunchtime.
