Little Malop Street Mall

December 11, 2019 by

Trouble In The Mall

In 2018/2019, multiple fights were filmed and shared online. This led to increased media attention and an increased police presence.

The Speakys store moved to Market Square, prompting articles about businesses leaving the area. This had been a trend that had been occuring for years. In April 2015, the Addy reported on two businesses that stopped operating in the mall due to lack of foot traffic.

Revitalizing The Mall

In September, Council unveiled their plans to improve the mall. I was able to get photos in late September before the works started.

Timeline

October 18: The public toilet was removed.

October 28: The chairs were removed from the central area

November 11: New street furniture was observed in the mall

November 20: The fountains were switched on again

November 21: This post collects multiple changes that occured during November. Street lighting was added and more chairs were removed.

History Repeating

In 2015, an audit recommended that the council remove the fountain feature ‘as part of a plan to reinvigorate the mall as a vibrant area of activity and alfresco dining.’
